Major League Baseball and the Umpires Association
[ send me this paper ]
This 8 page

labor issues of Major League Baseball and baseball umpires.
Certain fundamental labor issues are in force, however, the
unique aspects of professional sports adds to the overall
complexity of the process. The decision by the umpires to “quit”
rather than strike in September of 1999 ultimately backfired on
them and they have had to work to reconstruct some type of a

Malamud's "The Natural": Novel and Movie.
[ send me this paper ]
(5 pp). Bernard Malamud's (1914-1986) first novel,
The Natural, an allegory about the rise and fall
of a baseball player, was published in 1952.
According to Rothstein (1986), it is different from
most of his work in that there are no Jewish
characters. After the book was made into a movie
starring Robert Redford in 1984, Malamud said in an
interview that he was grateful for the film because
it allowed him ''to be recognized once more as an
American writer'' as opposed to a Jewish writer.
But The Natural is similar to his later novels and
stories in that it lies in the realm of a morality
play. Bibliography lists 4 sources.

Men's Magazine Ads: Representation Of Masculinity
[ send me this paper ]
5 pages in length. Historically, the media have not earned the most stellar of reputations when it comes to portraying reality; indeed, the manner by which magazine advertising skews the perspective of male masculinity has come to represent a commonplace approach to capitalistic consumerism. Proponents of magazine advertising contend that there is one phrase for those who are prone to the deceptiveness of media marketing: caveat emptor. They argue that it is not up to the advertiser to be responsible for the buyer's gullibility, even if that buyer happens to be an impressionable male seeking to emulate the ad's buff model. Natural Turf Versus Artificial Turf Sports Fields
[ send me this paper ]
This 16 page
report discusses the benefits and controversies that exist in the
sports world regarding artificial and natural turf playing
fields. In the big money realm of professional sports, playing
surfaces are generally chosen and maintained on the basis of what
is the most cost effective and least problematic. Concerns
regarding aesthetics, the “feel” of the surface, and personal
preference of the players have been thought of as secondary, even
tertiary, concerns. However, a huge number of injuries have been
directly blamed on artificial turf and have resulted in key
players being kept out of a game or even put on the injured list
for an entire season. This report examines a number of those
concerns and looks at potential alternatives. Bibliography lists
